Section 1: What is the Surface Laptop?

Microsoft Surface Laptop is a thin, light, ultra-thin and light 13.5-inch notebook computer that weighs 2.76 lbs and measures 0.61 x 9.14 x 0.70 in (73.5 x 201.6 x 14.5 mm) when closed, or 0.27 lb (88 g) with the lid closed. The screen size is 13.5 inches. The computer has a sleek aluminum body with a silver aluminum kickstand with rounded edges that helps prop the Surface Laptop at a comfortable viewing angle.

A USB-C port is placed at the right side of the notebook and a Mini DisplayPort is also present on the top along with a 3.5 mm headset jack. Users will be able to connect accessories and the Surface Pen to the notebook. There is no RJ45 connector for wired connections.

The Design

After breaking my nearly-2-year-old Surface Pro in a few places, I decided I needed to upgrade to something a little bit more durable. I did a lot of research and opted for the latest version of Microsoft's ubiquitous tablet: the Surface Laptop. What I wasn't expecting was that the Surface Laptop would turn out to be something completely different from the Surface Pro.

The Surface Laptop comes in two different variants, one with a Core i5, 128 GB SSD, and 4 GB RAM, the other with a Core i7, 256 GB SSD, and 8 GB RAM. Both models have a 13.5-inch touchscreen, with a 3:2 aspect ratio, 10-point multi-touch, and a resolution of 2256 x 1504.

To me, the design is lovely. Like a bit of the Apple MacBook Air, it is designed around the display. And it really is lovely.

The screen

The screen is one of the standouts of the Surface Laptop's overall design, and of the experience on the whole. The screen is simple and crisp, with colors that pop and motion you'll find smooth. When you tap, pull or drag your way around the Windows desktop, it's almost like the Surface itself is reacting in kind.

Although you do occasionally get a little reflection on the screen, it's nothing that could be seen through binoculars. The speakers are also solid; they get a little shrill when playing videos, but you won't mind after a while.

An important factor to note about the screen, and to this end, you'll need to do some repairs if you do not have experience with such things. The Surface Laptop screen has a glossy finish.

The keyboard

Gone is the chiclet-style keyboard used in earlier Surface products, and in its place is a softly tapered, firm plastic chassis that is slightly disappointing. It feels sturdier than the old one, and the keys and individual keycaps (as opposed to the unchangeable and separate font, which looks like it was lifted off a shoddy third-tier professional keyboard) are nice, though they're not as flat as those in the MacBook, and have a bit of bounce to them.

The keys themselves are wide and quite flat, with rounded corners and a slightly raised upper lip to stop the screen from rolling off them during typing.  LG LCD Laptop 17

The weight

The Surface Laptop weighs 1.25kg and is 13.5mm thick, making it the lightest 12.3-inch laptop on the market. The new laptop is slightly thicker and heavier than the original Surface Laptop, which was 14.5mm thick and weighed 1.29kg.

Price and Warranty

The Surface Laptop is available with a choice of 4GB or 8GB of RAM. While 8GB of RAM is enough for most tasks, you can buy an upgrade to 16GB of RAM which should be more than enough for anyone with a daily browser habit. You can also choose between 128GB or 256GB SSD storage. Pricing starts at $999 (£949, AU$1,499).

The display

The Surface Laptop has a 12.3-inch touchscreen, similar to the 13.5-inch display of the Surface Pro 4.

Battery life and charging

On my review unit, the battery drained quickly after constant use, taking less than 3.5 hours to fully charge. This is because I was heavily relying on Windows 10 and streaming HD videos on Netflix to complete my battery test. The battery lasts for an average of 7 hours, even if you are sleeping.

If you use the computer casually without using it for long hours, you can get over 10 hours of battery life. If you use the device while binge watching your favourite show, you can also get over 12 hours of battery life.

I plugged in a USB battery pack and ran my tests for 3 hours using the laptop and the battery pack, and the battery life on the battery pack dropped to 8 hours. HP 15 Laptop Review

Performance and Software

Performance – The battery is tiny and takes a while to charge. The processor is pretty much perfect with most programs or games. You can easily handle multiple tasks and it is pretty decent at cooling in a small laptop. Its performance is good enough for the price you pay and how you use it. In terms of battery life, this is another good reason to buy it. It lasted 4 hours and 30 minutes in my tests and you can expect it to last much longer than that if you use it a lot. Battery life is probably the only thing that is a bit surprising to me. I expected it to last for longer, but it actually lasted nearly 5 hours. I found the Surface Laptop's battery indicator too hard to see sometimes. It was difficult to see whether the battery was almost dead, or just close.
